Vein Therapy
Sclerotherapy is the treatment of unsightly veins on the legs or on face that can be easily treated and eliminated with different techniques based on what’s right for your particular situation. Sclerotherapy forces blood to reroute through healthier veins and the collapsed, treated veins are reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fade. Treated veins fade within a few weeks.
There are two common modalities for treating spider veins non-surgically. We can utilize laser technologies that target the vascular tissue itself or injection of medications into the blood vessels to collapse them and obliterate those pesky spider veins that we all hate. Living in Florida or any warm weather location allows for beach and pool trips year round and spider veins can make some of us very self-conscious… Come to The Box to get those veins treated and enjoy year-round bathing suits and shorts!
The Laser Modality
What is a laser treatment for spider veins?
Laser treatment is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose and spider veins in which laser light energy is emitted over the areas of concern and the cells reacts with the light energy, causing the vein to close and seal shut. Once blood flow has been cut off to the veins, they are no longer swollen and visible. Blood will then naturally reroute to healthy veins.
Is laser right for me?
If you’re looking for a minimally invasive procedure to get rid of your unsightly varicose and spider veins, laser treatment is right for you. It is safe on all skin types as long as the correct technology and intensity id being used.
What to expect?
Laser treatment takes approximately an hour. Most patients report feeling little, if any, pain during treatment.
The Laser Modality
What is the down time?
You may experience temporary soreness and slight swelling, which can be treated effectively with over the counter, non-aspirin pain relievers. Symptoms will subside within five days. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after the procedure and can resume normal activities the same day. For a few weeks following treatment, your vein specialist may recommend a regular walking regimen and suggest you refrain from very strenuous activities and prolonged periods of standing.
When will I see results?
The visibility of varicose and spider veins will be nearly or completely eliminated within one to two weeks following laser treatment. The veins treated may appear darker for the first few days following the treatment and then begin to disappear.
The Injection Modality
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy begins with an injection of medicated solution directly into inflamed varicose and spider veins after properly cleaning the skin. The solution injected irritates the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and stick together. The blood then clots. Over time, the vessels turn into scar tissue that fades from view without any visible marks or scars.
Which areas can sclerotherapy treat?
Sclerotherapy is most commonly done on the legs and thighs, but the procedure can be performed on most places of the body where the appropriate veins exist
Am I a candidate?
Sclerotherapy is a great noninvasive treatment for adult men and women. You should schedule a free consultation with our doctor to make sure you are a good candidate. Large varicose vein that result from vascular insufficiency are not treated with nonsurgical modalities and appear very different from spider veins. Our physician will examine you and determine which modality best treats your specific issue.
The Injection Modality
What can I expect the day of a sclerotherapy treatment?
The doctor will use a very fine needle to inject a specialized formula directly into the targeted veins. You may experience mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, especially when larger veins are injected. The number of veins injected in one session depends on the size and location of the veins. The procedure itself takes approximately 15-30 minutes.
What is recovery?
After sclerotherapy, you will be able to drive yourself home and resume your regular daily activities. Walking is encouraged, but you must limit strenuous activity for at least three days following the procedure. For three days after your treatment, we will have you wear support stockings to compress the treated vessels. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 48 hours. Tylenol may be used if needed. Also avoid hot baths, hot compresses, saunas and direct exposure to sunlight for the first 5-7 days. You may shower, but make sure the water is as cold as you can tolerate for best results.
The Injection Modality
When will I see results from sclerotherapy and how long does it last?
With each treatment, up to 80% of visible varicose and spider veins will be destroyed. Depending on the severity of the veins or how extensive they are, it may take a few treatments to reach optimal results. In general, spider veins respond in three to six weeks and larger veins respond in three to four months. If the veins respond to the treatment, they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear at the same rate as before. This will require maintenance injections for optimal long lasting results.
